Riccardo Calafiori
Riccardo Calafiori is the left-sided defender with centre-back steel and full-back swagger. He came to Arsenal after a breakout Bologna season and gives the side another way to defend aggressively without losing craft on the ball.

Before N5
Calafiori started at Roma, left Italy for Basel, then returned to Serie A with Bologna and exploded under a side that played brave, modern football. The move from promising defender to international-level operator happened quickly, but not cheaply: it was built on setbacks, reinvention and a lot of front-foot defending.
The Arsenal chapter
Arsenal signed him from Bologna in 2024 because he fit the club's favourite profile: technically clean, physically bold, positionally flexible. He can play as a left centre-back or a left-back who carries inside, giving Arteta another defender who changes the shape without needing a substitution.
How he plays
Calafiori likes to step out. He drives with the ball, wins duels high up the pitch and has the confidence to pass through the first line rather than around it. The risk is part of the charm; the control comes from learning exactly when to go.
