Mikel Merino
Mikel Merino is Arsenal's aerial answer at both ends and the closer of tight matches, a European champion with Spain before he ever pulled on the red shirt. Few midfielders anywhere combine his physical reach with his touch.
| born | Pamplona, Spain, 1996 |
|---|---|
| signed | 2024, from Real Sociedad, ~£28m |
Before N5
A son of Pamplona and an Osasuna academy graduate, Merino debuted at eighteen and was in Germany with Borussia Dortmund by 2016. A season at Newcastle followed before Real Sociedad brought him home to Spain in 2018, and there he became one of La Liga's most complete midfielders, winning the Copa del Rey in the delayed 2020 final. At Euro 2024 he scored the 119th-minute quarter-final winner against Germany; weeks later, Arsenal paid around £28m.
The Arsenal chapter
Arsenal signed Merino because he offered three useful answers at once: height, control, and experience. In the title year he became the designated closer — the midfielder sent on, or pushed forward, when a lead needed protecting or a low block needed moving.
How he plays
Merino is the league's best aerial midfielder, dominant at corners in both boxes. On the ground he receives under pressure with an old-fashioned La Liga calm, shields the ball with that long frame, and arrives late in the area when defences forget him. He can play eight, six, or emergency nine, and grumbles about none of them.
