Ødegaard debuted for Strømsgodset at fifteen and for Norway at fifteen too, then signed for Real Madrid at sixteen in 2015 amid the most feverish transfer circus of the decade. The years that followed were an education in patience: loans at Heerenveen, Vitesse, and finally Real Sociedad, where the 2019/20 season restored him to the player everyone had promised. Madrid never quite found room. Arsenal did, taking him on loan in January 2021.

The Arsenal chapter

The permanent deal that summer now reads like theft. Made captain in 2022, Ødegaard set the standards the whole rebuild ran on, and in the title year he led the league winners with quiet authority. The programme still writes itself without inflated numbers.

How he plays

Ødegaard lives in the right half-space, receiving on the half-turn between the lines and playing the pass after the pass — the reverse ball that turns Saka's isolation into a chance. He presses like a forward, sets the tempo with two touches, and bends shots in from the edge when defences sit. The wand of a left foot does the rest.
