Saliba comes from Bondy, the Paris suburb that also produced Kylian Mbappé, and learned his football at AS Bondy before Saint-Étienne's academy claimed him. A first-team debut arrived at seventeen, and within a year Arsenal had paid £27m for a teenager most of England hadn't seen. What followed was an apprenticeship by loan — Saint-Étienne again, Nice, then a magnificent season at Marseille that brought the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year award and a France debut.

The Arsenal chapter

When he finally made his Premier League debut in August 2022, three years after signing, the wait stopped mattering within about twenty minutes. He has been first name on the team sheet ever since: calm in the sprint, cold in the duel, and central to the title defence.

How he plays

Saliba defends with stillness. He rarely lunges, rarely slides, and almost never gets turned; his speed lets him defend acres alone, so the rest of the team can squeeze high. On the ball he strides through the first line of pressure or clips passes between it. His best work looks like nothing happening — which is precisely the point.
