Timber came through Ajax, which tells you most of what you need to know: comfortable in possession, tactically literate, and raised to defend by controlling the ball. He broke into the Dutch national side early and left Amsterdam with a reputation as one of Europe's cleanest young defenders.

The Arsenal chapter

Arsenal signed him in 2023 and immediately saw why. Then came the knee injury on the opening weekend, a brutal pause just as the move was beginning. The return mattered: not just because he could cover positions, but because his calmness gives Arsenal another way to build attacks from the back.

How he plays

Timber defends like a midfielder who enjoys defending. He receives in tight spaces, steps inside to help progression, and can turn out of pressure on either side. Out of possession he is compact, strong in contact, and rarely looks rushed.
