Oleksandr Zinchenko

Zinchenko was raised in Shakhtar Donetsk's academy until war in the Donbas scattered it in 2014, and he restarted his career at Ufa in Russia as a teenage attacking midfielder. Manchester City signed him in 2016 for a modest fee, loaned him to PSV, and then Pep Guardiola performed the conversion: number ten into inverted left-back. Four Premier League titles, an FA Cup and four League Cups followed before Arsenal paid around £32m in 2022.

The Arsenal chapter

Zinchenko arrived alongside Gabriel Jesus and changed Arsenal's idea of itself; the standards, the title-winner's certainty, the positional sophistication all travelled with him. Through the seasons since he has been the build-up's tuning fork. In 2025/26 he spent the campaign out on loan — the Arsenal chapter paused rather than closed, a squad refresh sending him elsewhere for the regular minutes the rotation at the Emirates could no longer promise.

How he plays

Zinchenko inverts. From left-back he steps into midfield beside Rice, giving Arsenal an extra passer where games are decided and freeing the left winger high and wide. His left foot finds line-breaking passes most full-backs don't see, and he organises constantly, audibly. The trade-off is space in behind — which is why Saliba and Gabriel matter.
