Ian Wright

Wright, Wright, Wright. A late starter who arrived as a record signing and left a record breaker, Ian Wright lit up Highbury with a striker's hunger and a showman's joy — and toppled a goalscoring record that had stood for more than half a century.

Before Arsenal

Wright came to the professional game late, signing his first contract at Crystal Palace as he approached his twenties after years in non-league football. He starred at Selhurst Park, famously scoring twice as a substitute in the 1990 FA Cup Final. In 1991 Arsenal paid £2.5m to bring him to Highbury — a club-record fee — and he repaid it almost instantly with goals.

The Arsenal years

Wright was a goal machine across seven seasons, top-scoring season after season. In 1997 he broke Cliff Bastin's club goalscoring record, a mark that had stood since the 1930s, ripping off his shirt to reveal an undervest counting down the milestone. He won the League title and Double in 1997/98 in his final season, beloved by supporters as few have been before or since.

How he played

Pure penalty-box predator — quick, sharp and gleefully opportunistic, alive to every half-chance and rebound. What he gave beyond the goals was passion: a player who celebrated like a fan and made the crowd feel he was one of them.
