Ashley Cole
A product of the Hale End academy, Ashley Cole emerged as the finest English left-back of his generation. Rapid, tenacious and tactically sharp, he overlapped with the best of them and defended with a ferocity that belied his slight frame. For several seasons he was simply the standard at left-back in the English game.

Before Arsenal
Cole came through the Arsenal academy at Hale End, the club's famed youth setup, having joined as a boy. Originally a forward-thinking player, he was reshaped into a full-back and broke into the first team during the 2000-01 season, quickly displacing more experienced rivals. His emergence was a triumph for the club's youth development and for Arsene Wenger's faith in homegrown talent.
The Arsenal years
Cole became a cornerstone of one of the great Arsenal sides, an ever-present force down the left. He was a key member of the Invincibles squad that went through the 2003/04 league season unbeaten, his stamina and pace allowing Arsenal to attack and defend in numbers on his flank. After a series of contract disputes, he left for Chelsea in 2006, a move that soured his standing with many supporters despite his on-pitch brilliance.
How he played
Cole was the prototype modern full-back: explosive going forward, relentless tracking back, and a brilliant one-on-one defender who rarely lost his man. He read danger early, recovered ground others could not, and his overlapping runs gave Arsenal an extra dimension down the left for years.
