Dennis Bergkamp

The non-flying Dutchman. Dennis Bergkamp arrived as Bruce Rioch's marquee signing and stayed to become the artist of Arsenal's golden age — a second striker of sublime touch and vision whose goals were not so much scored as composed.

Before Arsenal

Bergkamp was schooled in the Ajax of Johan Cruyff's philosophy, winning the UEFA Cup and earning a reputation as one of Europe's finest forwards. A move to Inter Milan in Serie A proved an unhappy fit for his game. In 1995 Arsenal paid £7.5m to bring him to Highbury — then a club-record fee — a statement of ambition that would help reshape the team's identity.

The Arsenal years

Bergkamp flourished under Arsène Wenger, the perfect foil for a succession of strikers. He won the Double in 1997/98 and again in 2001/02, and was an ever-present presence behind the Invincibles of 2003/04. His goal against Newcastle in 2002 — the flick, the spin, the finish in one impossible motion — is among the most replayed in the club's history. His fear of flying became part of the legend.

How he played

A deep-lying forward with a first touch that bordered on telepathy, Bergkamp killed the ball dead and saw passes others could not. Equal parts provider and finisher, he turned the awkward into the beautiful and gave Arsenal a brain at the top of the pitch.
