A blur of red hair and direct running, Fredrik Ljungberg arrived from Sweden as a relative unknown and became one of the most distinctive Gunners of the Wenger era. Quick, brave and at his most dangerous arriving late into the box, he was a constant menace from the right flank and a fully fledged Invincible.

Before Arsenal

Born in Vittsjo, Ljungberg made his name at Halmstads BK in his native Sweden, where his pace and willingness to attack defenders marked him out as a talent for the future. Arsene Wenger famously moved for him in 1998 having watched him play for Sweden against England, signing the young winger before many Arsenal supporters had even seen him kick a ball. It was a typically bold piece of recruitment.

The Arsenal years

Ljungberg grew into a totem of the side, his runs from deep proving decisive in the biggest matches. He scored in the 2002 FA Cup final win over Chelsea, capping the season in which Arsenal claimed the Double. He was a key part of the Invincibles squad that went unbeaten in the league in 2003/04, and his late charges into the box brought a stream of crucial goals across nine seasons in red and white.

How he played

Tireless and fearless, Ljungberg was the archetypal Wenger wide man: he could hug the touchline or ghost inside, and his timing of runs beyond the centre-forward was exceptional. Strong in the tackle for a winger and utterly committed, he combined Scandinavian discipline with a real eye for a decisive goal.
