Lauren
Calm, composed and deceptively tough, Lauren was the steady presence at right-back for one of Arsenal's greatest sides. A Cameroon international converted from his earlier life as a midfielder and winger, he brought positional intelligence and a reliable penalty-taker's nerve to the Invincibles back four.

Before Arsenal
Born in Cameroon and raised in Spain, Lauren built his career in La Liga, arriving at Arsenal from Mallorca in 2000. He had played further forward as a winger and midfielder, but Arsene Wenger saw in him the athleticism and reading of the game to thrive at full-back. It proved an inspired conversion, turning a versatile attacker into a dependable international right-back.
The Arsenal years
Lauren settled into the right-back berth and became part of the Invincibles, ever-present in the back four that went the 2003/04 league season unbeaten. Cool under pressure, he was also trusted from the penalty spot and tucked away important kicks. A Cameroon international throughout his time in north London, he gave the side balance and quiet authority before his Arsenal career wound down by 2007.
How he played
Lauren defended with a midfielder's poise, picking the right moment to step out and the right moment to hold. Strong, quick and unflustered, he rarely dived into challenges and seldom lost his head. His composure made him the ideal partner for a back line that prized control as much as steel.
