Patrick Vieira
The midfield general and the heartbeat of Arsène Wenger's first great Arsenal side. Tall, combative and astonishingly elegant, Patrick Vieira drove the team from box to box, captained the Invincibles and bowed out with the last kick of a Cup final.

Before Arsenal
Vieira began at Cannes before a move to AC Milan in Serie A, where first-team chances were scarce. In 1996 the largely unknown Frenchman arrived at Arsenal for around £3.5m — a signing that effectively heralded the arrival of Arsène Wenger before the manager himself had officially taken charge. Few knew him; within months he was the most influential midfielder in the league.
The Arsenal years
Vieira anchored the engine room through the club's most decorated era, winning the Double in 1997/98 and 2001/02 and captaining the unbeaten Invincibles of 2003/04. His famous battles with Roy Keane defined an age of English midfield play. He left for Juventus in 2005, but not before his final act in red and white: striking the decisive penalty to win the 2005 FA Cup, the very last kick of his Arsenal career.
How he played
A complete midfielder — long legs eating up the ground, a tackler's bite and a passer's calm. He won the ball, carried it and arrived late in the box, marrying physical dominance with technical poise in a way English football had rarely seen.
